Aldosterone, Serum
What it is
The Aldosterone, Serum test measures the level of aldosterone, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Aldosterone plays a key role in regulating blood pressure, sodium, and potassium balance in the body. Abnormal levels can indicate problems with the adrenal glands, kidneys, or blood pressure regulation.
Uses
This test is used to diagnose and monitor conditions such as primary aldosteronism (Conn’s syndrome), adrenal gland tumors, Addison’s disease, and secondary hypertension. It is often ordered along with renin testing to calculate the aldosterone/renin ratio (ARR), which provides more accurate diagnostic information.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend the Aldosterone, Serum test if you have symptoms such as high blood pressure that does not improve with treatment, muscle weakness, fatigue, frequent urination, low potassium levels, or unexplained dehydration.
Abnormal Results
High Aldosterone: May suggest primary aldosteronism (adrenal overproduction), adrenal tumors, Cushing’s syndrome, or excessive activation of the renin-angiotensin system.
Low Aldosterone: May indicate Addison’s disease (adrenal insufficiency), adrenal gland damage, or certain medications that affect hormone production.
Risks
The test involves a routine blood draw and carries minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and in rare cases, dizziness or infection.
