Anti-Streptolysin O (ASO) Quantitative, Serum
What it is
The Anti-Streptolysin O (ASO) Quantitative test measures the level of antibodies produced against streptolysin O, a toxin released by Group A Streptococcus bacteria. High ASO levels indicate a recent or past streptococcal infection, which may lead to complications if untreated.
Uses
This test is commonly used to help diagnose complications of streptococcal infections such as rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis. It is also used to confirm a recent streptococcal throat or skin infection when cultures are no longer positive.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend the ASO test if you have joint pain, fever, fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath, or swelling. It is also advised if there are signs of kidney inflammation, heart involvement, or complications after a strep infection.
Abnormal Results
High ASO Levels: Indicate a recent or ongoing streptococcal infection, commonly linked with rheumatic fever, scarlet fever, or post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.
Normal or Low ASO Levels: Suggest no recent strep infection or that antibody levels have returned to normal after infection.
Risks
The test is a standard blood test with minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, slight bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
