Typhoid IgM Rapid, Serum
What it is
The Typhoid IgM Rapid test is a quick blood test that detects IgM antibodies against Salmonella typhi, the bacteria responsible for typhoid fever. It helps in the early diagnosis of typhoid infection, often giving results within a short time compared to traditional culture methods.
Uses
This test is primarily used to diagnose acute typhoid fever, especially during the early stages of infection. It helps doctors begin timely treatment, reducing complications. The test is also useful in areas where typhoid is endemic or in patients with a history of possible exposure through contaminated food or water.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend the Typhoid IgM Rapid test if you experience prolonged fever, abdominal pain, headache, weakness, loss of appetite, diarrhea or constipation, and an enlarged spleen or liver. It is commonly used for patients with unexplained fever lasting more than a week.
Abnormal Results
Positive IgM: Indicates recent or current infection with Salmonella typhi. Suggests acute typhoid fever and supports the need for immediate medical treatment.
Negative IgM: Suggests no recent infection. However, early infection may not be detected, and confirmation with blood culture or repeat testing may be necessary.
Risks
The Typhoid IgM Rapid test is a simple blood test with minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
