Beta-2 Macroglobulin (Urine)
What it is
The Beta-2 Macroglobulin (B2M) urine test measures the level of beta-2 microglobulin, a low molecular weight protein that is normally filtered by the kidneys. It helps in assessing kidney function, especially the proximal tubules, and can indicate early kidney damage or certain immune and blood disorders.
Uses
This test is used to evaluate kidney function, monitor patients with kidney disease, detect early tubular damage, and support diagnosis of multiple myeloma, lymphomas, and certain autoimmune disorders. It is also useful in monitoring exposure to nephrotoxic drugs or heavy metals.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend the Beta-2 Microglobulin urine test if you have symptoms such as frequent urination, swelling in legs or around the eyes, unexplained fatigue, bone pain, recurrent infections, or if you are being monitored for known kidney or blood-related conditions.
Abnormal Results
High Levels: May indicate tubular kidney damage, chronic kidney disease, multiple myeloma, lymphoma, autoimmune disease, or toxic exposure (e.g., heavy metals, certain drugs).
Low Levels: Usually not clinically significant but may be seen with very efficient kidney filtration.
Risks
The test involves collection of a urine sample and has no direct risks. It is a safe and non-invasive procedure.
