Bilirubin Direct, Serum
What it is
The Bilirubin Direct, Serum test measures the level of direct (conjugated) bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment formed during the normal breakdown of red blood cells. Direct bilirubin is processed by the liver and excreted into bile, and elevated levels may indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or other health conditions.
Uses
This test is used to evaluate liver function, diagnose jaundice, monitor patients with known liver or biliary disorders, and help differentiate between direct and indirect causes of hyperbilirubinemia.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test if you experience yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, pale stools, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, or unexplained liver function abnormalities.
Abnormal Results
High Direct Bilirubin: May indicate liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, bile duct obstruction (gallstones, tumors), or inherited disorders affecting bilirubin metabolism.
Low or Normal Direct Bilirubin: Usually considered normal; however, abnormal total bilirubin with normal direct bilirubin may suggest unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia (e.g., hemolysis, Gilbert’s syndrome).
Risks
The test involves a simple blood draw with minimal risks. Possible side effects include slight pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
