Liver Profile Mini
What it is
The Liver Profile Mini is a basic blood test panel that measures key markers of liver health. It typically includes bilirubin (total and direct), SGPT (ALT), SGOT (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and sometimes total protein and albumin. These tests provide an overview of how well the liver is functioning in metabolizing nutrients, processing toxins, and producing essential proteins.
Uses
This test is used to screen for liver damage, monitor liver function in patients taking medications that may affect the liver, and detect early signs of conditions such as hepatitis, fatty liver, or bile duct obstruction. It is also a useful part of preventive health check-ups or pre-surgical assessments.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend the Liver Profile Mini if you have symptoms such as yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), persistent fatigue, abdominal pain or swelling, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, pale stools, or unexplained weight changes. It may also be advised for people with alcohol use, hepatitis infections, obesity, or family history of liver disease.
Abnormal Results
Elevated ALT/AST: Suggests possible liver cell injury from hepatitis, fatty liver, alcohol use, or toxins.
High Bilirubin: May indicate jaundice, bile duct obstruction, or impaired liver function.
Abnormal ALP: Can reflect bile duct disease, liver disorders, or certain bone conditions.
Low Albumin/Protein: May suggest chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, or nutritional deficiencies.
Risks
The test involves a simple blood draw. Risks are minimal and may include mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. Serious complications are extremely rare.
