Dialysis Comprehensive Panel
What it is
The Dialysis Comprehensive Panel is a set of laboratory tests designed to monitor the health and treatment status of patients undergoing dialysis. This panel typically includes assessments of kidney function, electrolyte balance, liver function, mineral metabolism, blood counts, and nutritional status. It provides a broad overview of how well dialysis is working and helps detect complications early.
Uses
This panel is used to monitor patients on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. It helps doctors assess the effectiveness of treatment, evaluate overall health, and make necessary adjustments in dialysis frequency, medication, or diet. It also helps detect complications such as anemia, electrolyte imbalance, mineral bone disease, and cardiovascular risks common in dialysis patients.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
The test is ordered as a routine monitoring tool in all dialysis patients rather than for specific new symptoms. However, it may be especially indicated if a patient develops signs such as fatigue, weakness, irregular heartbeat, bone pain, fluid retention, confusion, or difficulty breathing, which may suggest electrolyte imbalance or dialysis-related complications.
Abnormal Results
Kidney Function Tests (BUN, Creatinine): Elevated values indicate reduced kidney clearance, expected in dialysis patients, but trends help assess dialysis adequacy.
Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Phosphate): Imbalances may signal inadequate dialysis or dietary noncompliance, and may increase risk of cardiac or bone complications.
Complete Blood Count: Low hemoglobin or hematocrit suggests anemia of chronic kidney disease, requiring erythropoietin or iron therapy.
Liver and Nutritional Markers (Albumin, Proteins): Low values may indicate malnutrition or chronic illness.
Risks
The panel requires routine blood collection, usually during dialysis sessions. Risks are minimal and include mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site, which typically resolve quickly.
