Acetone, Urine
What it is
The Acetone Urine test detects the presence of acetone, a type of ketone body, in urine. Ketones are produced when the body breaks down fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. High levels of acetone in urine may indicate uncontrolled diabetes or abnormal fat metabolism.
Uses
This test is commonly used to monitor diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), detect uncontrolled diabetes, and assess disorders related to abnormal fat metabolism. It helps doctors evaluate the severity of metabolic imbalance and guide treatment decisions.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you have symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, nausea, vomiting, rapid breathing, confusion, or fruity-smelling breath, which are often linked to ketoacidosis or severe diabetes.
Abnormal Results
High Acetone: Suggests uncontrolled diabetes, prolonged fasting, starvation, alcoholism, or a high-fat/low-carbohydrate diet.
Normal or Low Acetone: Typically expected in healthy metabolism with balanced diet and normal blood sugar levels.
Risks
This is a simple urine test with no direct risks. It only requires a fresh urine sample and is non-invasive.
