Acid Phosphatase, Serum
What it is
The Acid Phosphatase test measures the level of acid phosphatase enzyme in the blood. This enzyme is found in many tissues, especially the prostate, liver, spleen, red blood cells, and bone marrow. It is sometimes used as a tumor marker and can also help detect certain tissue damages.
Uses
The test is primarily used in the past to diagnose and monitor prostate cancer. Today, it is rarely used for prostate conditions because of the PSA test, but it may still help in evaluating the spread of prostate cancer to bones. It can also be used in cases of bone diseases, certain blood disorders, and to detect tissue damage after trauma or procedures.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test if a patient has symptoms like bone pain, difficulty urinating, blood in urine, pelvic pain, unexplained fractures, enlarged lymph nodes, or if prostate cancer or bone disease is suspected.
Abnormal Results
High Acid Phosphatase: Can be seen in metastatic prostate cancer, bone diseases like Paget’s disease, multiple myeloma, Gaucher’s disease, and after trauma or surgery.
Normal or Low Acid Phosphatase: Usually indicates no significant tissue damage or prostate cancer spread.
Risks
The test is a simple blood test and carries minimal risks. These may include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
