What it is

The AFB Culture using BACTEC-MGIT (Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube) is an advanced laboratory test to detect the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other mycobacteria. This automated liquid culture system allows faster and more sensitive detection of tuberculosis (TB) compared to traditional solid culture methods.

Uses

This test is primarily used to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) and other mycobacterial infections, confirm TB in patients with suspected symptoms, monitor treatment effectiveness, and identify drug-resistant strains when combined with further sensitivity testing.

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Doctors may recommend the AFB Culture, BACTEC-MGIT test if you experience symptoms such as chronic cough lasting more than two weeks, coughing up blood (hemoptysis), unexplained fever, night sweats, weight loss, chest pain, or persistent fatigue. It is also used for high-risk individuals with prior TB exposure.

Abnormal Results

Positive Culture: Indicates the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis or other mycobacteria, confirming infection and guiding further drug sensitivity testing.

Negative Culture: Suggests no TB infection detected. However, negative results do not completely rule out TB, especially in early or latent cases.

Risks

There are no direct risks from the culture itself. Risks are limited to the sample collection procedure (sputum, body fluids, or tissue biopsy), which may cause mild discomfort, bleeding, or rarely infection.
