Aldolase, Serum
What it is
The Aldolase Serum test measures the level of the enzyme aldolase in the blood. Aldolase plays a key role in breaking down glucose for energy, and it is found in high amounts in muscle tissue. Elevated levels can indicate muscle or liver damage.
Uses
This test is used to help diagnose and monitor muscle diseases such as muscular dystrophy, polymyositis, and dermatomyositis. It can also assist in detecting liver disorders and evaluating unexplained muscle weakness.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test if a patient has symptoms such as persistent muscle weakness, muscle pain, tenderness, difficulty climbing stairs or lifting objects, unexplained fatigue, or signs of liver disease like jaundice and abdominal pain.
Abnormal Results
High Aldolase: May indicate muscle disorders (muscular dystrophy, polymyositis), liver diseases (hepatitis, cirrhosis), or other conditions causing tissue damage.
Low Aldolase: Usually not significant, but may be seen in muscle wasting conditions.
Risks
The test is a simple blood test with minimal risks. Poss
