Allergy Screen
What it is
The Allergy Screen test is a blood test that detects the presence of allergy-related antibodies (IgE) in the body. It helps identify whether a person has an allergic tendency to common triggers such as food, pollen, dust, animal dander, or other environmental allergens.
Uses
This test is used to screen for multiple allergies at once, guide further allergy-specific testing, and support diagnosis in patients with unexplained allergic symptoms. It also helps doctors decide whether advanced allergy testing or avoidance strategies are necessary.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Common symptoms prompting an Allergy Screen test include sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, watery or itchy eyes, skin rashes, hives, asthma, cough, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, bloating, or unexplained reactions after food intake or environmental exposure.
Abnormal Results
Positive Results: Indicate elevated IgE antibodies suggesting sensitivity to one or more allergens. A detailed allergy panel may be required for specific allergen identification.
Negative Results: Suggest no significant allergic reaction detected, though mild allergies or intolerances may still exist.
Risks
The Allergy Screen is a routine blood test with minimal risks. Some individuals may experience mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
