Amylase, Serum
What it is
The Amylase, Serum test measures the level of the enzyme amylase in the blood. Amylase is produced mainly by the pancreas and salivary glands and helps break down carbohydrates into simple sugars. Elevated or reduced levels of amylase can indicate disorders of the pancreas or other conditions affecting digestion.
Uses
This test is commonly used to diagnose and monitor acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, gallbladder disease, and gastrointestinal blockages. It may also be ordered to investigate abdominal pain of unknown cause.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend the serum amylase test if you experience severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, loss of appetite, or swelling in the abdomen. It is often paired with lipase testing for better diagnostic accuracy.
Abnormal Results
High Amylase: May indicate acute or chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, gallstones, gastrointestinal perforation, kidney failure, or mumps (salivary gland infection).
Low Amylase: Can occur in advanced pancreatic damage, liver disease, cystic fibrosis, or after surgical removal of the pancreas.
Risks
The test is performed using a routine blood sample. Risks are minimal and may include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site. Rarely, dizziness or infection may occur.
