Androstenedione, Serum
What it is
The Androstenedione, Serum test measures the level of androstenedione, a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands, ovaries (in females), and testes (in males). Androstenedione is a precursor hormone that is converted into testosterone and estrogen. Measuring its levels helps evaluate adrenal and gonadal function and detect hormonal imbalances.
Uses
This test is used to investigate disorders related to abnormal androgen (male hormone) production. It helps in diagnosing conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), adrenal tumors, and certain ovarian or testicular disorders. It may also be ordered to evaluate symptoms of excess androgens or monitor therapy for hormonal conditions.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you experience symptoms such as irregular or absent menstrual cycles, infertility, excessive hair growth (hirsutism), acne, deepening of the voice, early puberty in children, or signs of virilization in females. In men, it may be ordered if androgen deficiency or adrenal/testicular dysfunction is suspected.
Abnormal Results
High Androstenedione Levels: May indicate PCOS, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, adrenal tumors, or ovarian tumors. In children, high levels can suggest premature puberty or adrenal gland disorders.
Low Androstenedione Levels: May be seen in adrenal insufficiency, ovarian failure, or hypopituitarism. They can also reflect impaired steroid production.
Risks
The test requires a simple blood draw, with minimal risks such as mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. These effects are temporary and rarely serious.
