Aspergillus IgG Antibodies, Serum
What it is
The Aspergillus IgG Antibodies test measures IgG class antibodies in the blood against Aspergillus species, a group of fungi that can cause lung and systemic infections. This test is particularly useful in diagnosing chronic pulmonary aspergillosis and allergic conditions caused by prolonged exposure to Aspergillus.
Uses
This test helps in diagnosing chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA), allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), and other Aspergillus-related lung diseases. It also supports monitoring patients with recurrent respiratory infections or those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you experience persistent cough, shortness of breath, coughing up blood (hemoptysis), chest pain, wheezing, or unexplained weight loss. It is also useful for patients with asthma, cystic fibrosis, or chronic lung disease at risk of Aspergillus infections.
Abnormal Results
Positive IgG: Indicates current or past infection with Aspergillus, often suggesting chronic pulmonary aspergillosis or allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. A high level may reflect active disease.
Negative IgG: Suggests no significant exposure or infection, but does not rule out early-stage or acute aspergillosis. Further testing such as IgE, culture, or imaging may be required.
Risks
The test is performed on a blood sample and carries minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
