Blood Culture BACTEC – Pediatric
What it is
The Blood Culture BACTEC – Pediatric test is a diagnostic test used to detect bacterial or fungal infections in the blood of infants and children. It uses the automated BACTEC system, which provides rapid and accurate detection of microorganisms by monitoring their growth in specialized culture bottles.
Uses
This test helps in diagnosing septicemia (bloodstream infections), detecting bacterial or fungal pathogens, guiding appropriate antibiotic or antifungal therapy, and monitoring critically ill children suspected of systemic infections.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test if a child has persistent fever, chills, unexplained irritability, rapid breathing, poor feeding, lethargy, or suspected sepsis. It is also recommended for premature infants or those with compromised immunity.
Abnormal Results
Positive Blood Culture: Indicates the presence of bacteria or fungi in the blood. The specific organism is identified, and antibiotic susceptibility testing is performed to guide treatment.
Negative Blood Culture: Suggests no detectable bloodstream infection. However, false negatives may occur if the child is already on antibiotics or if the microorganism grows very slowly.
Risks
The test involves collecting a blood sample. Risks are minimal and may include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site. Rarely, infection or dizziness can occur after the procedure.
