Brucella Antibody IgG, Serum
What it is
The Brucella Antibody IgG test detects IgG class antibodies in the blood against Brucella species, the bacteria that cause brucellosis. IgG antibodies usually appear later in the infection and remain for a long time, making this test valuable for identifying chronic, past, or relapsed brucellosis cases.
Uses
This test is used to diagnose chronic or past brucellosis, differentiate between acute (IgM) and chronic (IgG) infections, monitor treatment response, and detect relapse in previously treated patients.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you have long-standing fever, chills, or night sweats, persistent fatigue, joint or muscle pain, backache, enlarged liver or spleen, or a history of relapsing fever. It is also common in people with occupational exposure, such as farmers, veterinarians, and slaughterhouse workers.
Abnormal Results
Positive IgG: Suggests past exposure, chronic infection, or relapse of brucellosis. Must be interpreted alongside IgM testing, blood culture, or PCR for accurate staging.
Negative IgG: Indicates no past infection, though very early infections may test negative before the IgG response develops.
Risks
The test is a simple blood test with minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
