CA-125, Cancer Marker, Serum
What it is
The CA-125 test measures the level of Cancer Antigen 125 in the blood. CA-125 is a protein that is often elevated in women with ovarian cancer, but it may also rise in other cancers and certain non-cancerous conditions. This test is widely used as a tumor marker for ovarian cancer diagnosis and monitoring.
Uses
The CA-125 test helps in detecting and monitoring ovarian cancer, assessing treatment response, and checking for cancer recurrence. It may also be used in combination with imaging and other tumor markers for more accurate cancer evaluation.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test if you have symptoms such as pelvic pain, abdominal swelling, bloating, changes in bowel or bladder habits, unexplained weight loss, or a family history of ovarian cancer.
Abnormal Results
High CA-125 levels: Suggestive of ovarian cancer, other gynecological cancers, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, liver disease, or even pregnancy. Persistent high levels often warrant further evaluation.
Normal or low CA-125 levels: Usually indicate no significant cancer activity, but some ovarian cancers may not produce elevated CA-125, so results should always be interpreted with imaging and clinical findings.
Risks
This is a routine blood test with minimal risks. Some patients may experience mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site. Rarely, dizziness or infection may occur.
