Calcium, Random Urine
What it is
The Calcium, Random Urine test measures the amount of calcium excreted in a single urine sample collected at any time of the day. Calcium is an essential mineral for bone health, muscle contraction, and nerve function. Abnormal urinary calcium levels may indicate kidney problems, metabolic disorders, or bone disease.
Uses
This test is used to evaluate calcium balance in the body, diagnose kidney stones, investigate bone metabolism disorders like osteoporosis, and detect conditions such as hyperparathyroidism or renal tubular disorders. It also helps monitor treatment of calcium-related diseases.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend the test if you have recurrent kidney stones, bone pain, frequent urination, unexplained weakness, or suspected calcium or parathyroid disorders.
Abnormal Results
High Calcium in Urine (Hypercalciuria): May indicate hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D excess, certain kidney disorders, or bone breakdown conditions such as osteoporosis. It can also be linked with recurrent kidney stones.
Low Calcium in Urine (Hypocalciuria): May occur in kidney disease, low dietary calcium, vitamin D deficiency, or malabsorption disorders.
Risks
The test carries no direct risks since it requires only a urine sample. It is simple, non-invasive, and safe for all age groups.
