Calcium, Serum
What it is
The Calcium, Serum test measures the level of calcium in the blood. Calcium is a vital mineral needed for strong bones and teeth, proper muscle function, nerve signaling, and blood clotting. Most calcium in the body is stored in bones, while a small but critical amount circulates in the blood.
Uses
This test is used to evaluate calcium balance in the body, diagnose and monitor bone diseases, kidney disorders, parathyroid gland problems, and certain cancers. It also helps assess nutritional status and detect calcium imbalances caused by metabolic or hormonal conditions.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend a calcium blood test if you experience symptoms such as muscle cramps, spasms, or twitching, bone pain, frequent fractures, kidney stones, numbness or tingling in hands and feet, fatigue, confusion, or abnormal heart rhythms.
Abnormal Results
High Calcium (Hypercalcemia): May indicate hyperparathyroidism, certain cancers, excessive vitamin D intake, tuberculosis, or prolonged immobilization.
Low Calcium (Hypocalcemia): May suggest hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency, chronic kidney disease, pancreatitis, or malnutrition.
Risks
The test is a routine blood draw and carries minimal risks. Possible effects include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
