Candida albicans DNA Detection PCR
What it is
The Candida albicans DNA Detection PCR test identifies the genetic material (DNA) of Candida albicans, a yeast responsible for many fungal infections in humans. This highly sensitive molecular test detects even small amounts of fungal DNA, helping diagnose active infections quickly and accurately.
Uses
This test is used to diagnose systemic or localized candidiasis, confirm cases where traditional culture may be slow or inconclusive, and detect fungal infections in immunocompromised patients. It is also useful for monitoring treatment response in patients with recurrent Candida infections.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if a patient experiences persistent fever unresponsive to antibiotics, oral or genital thrush, urinary tract infections caused by yeast, bloodstream infections, or unexplained sepsis in high-risk individuals such as transplant recipients, cancer patients, or those with HIV/AIDS.
Abnormal Results
Positive Result: Indicates the presence of Candida albicans DNA, confirming an active fungal infection. Early detection allows timely antifungal therapy and improved outcomes.
Negative Result: Suggests no detectable Candida albicans infection at the time of testing, though repeat testing may be needed if clinical suspicion remains high.
Risks
The test itself carries no direct risks since it is performed on blood or tissue samples. Risks are only associated with the sample collection process, which may include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
