Catecholamines 24-Hour Urine Test
What it is
The Catecholamines 24-hour urine test measures the amount of catecholamines (dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine) excreted in the urine over a 24-hour period. Catecholamines are hormones produced by the adrenal glands that help regulate the body’s response to stress. This test is primarily used to detect adrenal gland disorders.
Uses
This test helps in diagnosing adrenal gland tumors such as pheochromocytoma and neuroblastoma. It is also useful for evaluating high blood pressure that does not respond to standard treatments and for monitoring patients with suspected adrenal hyperfunction.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test if you have symptoms like severe or resistant high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, excessive sweating, severe headaches, weight loss, tremors, or anxiety episodes that suggest an adrenal tumor or hormone imbalance.
Abnormal Results
High catecholamine levels: May indicate pheochromocytoma, neuroblastoma, paraganglioma, severe stress, or stimulant drug use.
Normal levels: Usually exclude adrenal tumors, but results should always be interpreted with clinical findings and other tests.
Risks
This test involves only urine collection and carries no direct risks. However, collecting urine for 24 hours may be inconvenient and requires careful storage to ensure accurate results.
