What it is

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Doctors may order this test if you have risk factors for heart disease such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, family history of cardiovascular disease, or abnormal lipid results. It is also performed during routine health check-ups and preventive screenings.

Abnormal Results

Low HDL Cholesterol: Associated with a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and atherosclerosis. Causes include poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, obesity, diabetes, or genetic conditions.

High HDL Cholesterol: Usually considered protective against heart disease. However, extremely high levels may sometimes be linked to other health issues and should be interpreted in context with the full lipid profile.

Risks

The test involves a routine blood draw, which carries minimal risks such as mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. These effects are temporary and uncommon compared to the benefits of early cardiovascular risk detection.
