Culture, Aerobic & Susceptibility, Vaginal Swab
What it is
The Culture, Aerobic & Susceptibility, Vaginal Swab test is a microbiological examination of a vaginal swab sample to detect the presence of aerobic bacteria (those that grow in the presence of oxygen). Once a pathogen is isolated, antibiotic susceptibility testing is performed to determine which antibiotics are most effective against the infection.
Uses
This test is used to diagnose bacterial vaginal infections that may cause abnormal discharge, itching, irritation, or odor. It is also helpful in identifying infections that may contribute to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or infertility if left untreated. By performing susceptibility testing, doctors can prescribe targeted antibiotics, reducing the risk of recurrence and resistance.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you experience unusual vaginal discharge, persistent itching, burning, pelvic pain, pain during intercourse, or recurrent infections. It may also be ordered when a routine gynecological exam suggests infection, or when initial treatments have failed.
Abnormal Results
Positive Culture: Indicates the presence of pathogenic aerobic bacteria such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, or Enterococcus species. The susceptibility results guide the choice of effective antibiotic therapy.
Negative Culture: Suggests no significant aerobic bacterial infection. Symptoms may then be due to viral, fungal (like Candida), or non-infectious causes.
Risks
The test involves a simple vaginal swab collection, which is safe and minimally invasive. Risks are very rare and may include mild discomfort or spotting during sample collection.
