Cytokine Assay – 7 Markers
What it is
The Cytokine Assay – 7 Markers is a specialized blood test that measures the levels of seven key cytokines—small proteins that regulate immune and inflammatory responses. Cytokines act as signaling molecules between immune cells and play an important role in inflammation, infection defense, autoimmune activity, and cancer biology. This panel helps in understanding the body’s immune status and disease activity.
Uses
This assay is used in the diagnosis and monitoring of autoimmune diseases, chronic infections, cancers, and inflammatory disorders. It is also employed in research and clinical practice to assess immune dysregulation in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, and certain viral infections. In transplant medicine, it can help in evaluating graft rejection and immunosuppression status.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Your doctor may recommend this test if you experience persistent inflammation, unexplained fever, joint pain, chronic fatigue, weight loss, recurrent infections, or if you have an established autoimmune or inflammatory disease. It may also be ordered to track disease progression or treatment response.
Abnormal Results
Elevated Cytokine Levels: May suggest ongoing inflammation, autoimmune activation, infection, or certain malignancies. High cytokine levels are also associated with “cytokine storm” in severe infections such as COVID-19 or sepsis.
Low or Suppressed Cytokine Levels: May occur with immunosuppressive therapy, certain genetic immune deficiencies, or after organ transplantation to prevent rejection.
Risks
The test requires a standard blood sample. Risks are minimal and may include mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site, which usually resolve quickly. The main consideration is that results need careful interpretation in the context of your clinical condition.
