Fever Panel Basic
What it is
The Fever Panel Basic is a group of essential blood tests designed to screen for common causes of acute fever. Since fever can be caused by infections ranging from viral to bacterial and parasitic, this panel helps doctors quickly narrow down the underlying reason and guide initial treatment.
Uses
This panel is typically ordered in patients presenting with unexplained or prolonged fever. Depending on the laboratory, the Fever Panel Basic usually includes:
- Dengue NS1 Antigen or IgM: Detects early dengue infection.
- Malaria (Rapid Antigen or Peripheral Smear): Identifies Plasmodium parasites causing malaria.
- Typhoid (Widal Test or Typhi IgM): Screens for Salmonella typhi infection.
- Complete Blood Count (CBC): Provides supportive evidence like anemia, low platelets, or raised white blood cells.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
This test is recommended if you experience persistent or acute fever with associated symptoms such as chills, headache, muscle or joint pain, rash, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or unexplained fatigue. It is especially useful in tropical and endemic regions where these infections are common.
Abnormal Results
Positive Dengue, Malaria, or Typhoid Tests: Confirm the specific infection causing fever and guide appropriate treatment.
Abnormal CBC Findings: Low platelet count (common in dengue), anemia (seen in malaria), or elevated white blood cells (seen in bacterial infections) provide supportive diagnostic information.
Risks
The panel involves a standard blood draw. Risks are minimal and limited to mild bruising, pain, or dizziness at the puncture site, which are temporary and uncommon.
