Histopathology, Large Specimen
What it is
The Histopathology, Large Specimen test involves microscopic examination of a surgically removed large tissue sample or organ. Unlike small biopsies, this examination is performed on bigger specimens, such as tumors, excised organs (e.g., uterus, kidney, colon), or large excisional masses. A pathologist carefully evaluates the tissue architecture, cell types, and margins to establish a definitive diagnosis and guide treatment planning.
Uses
This test is used to:
- Diagnose benign and malignant tumors.
- Assess excised organs or large tissue masses for disease.
- Determine the stage and spread of cancers.
- Evaluate surgical margins to confirm complete removal of a lesion or tumor.
- Identify inflammatory, degenerative, or infectious changes in large organs.
Symptoms / Conditions That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you have:
- A surgically removed tumor or mass (benign or malignant).
- Organ removal (e.g., hysterectomy, nephrectomy, colectomy).
- Large lesions suspected to be cancerous.
- Chronic or unexplained organ dysfunction requiring removal and evaluation.
Abnormal Results
- Benign Findings: Indicate non-cancerous growths such as fibroids, adenomas, or cysts.
- Malignant Findings: Confirm the presence of cancer, including tumor type, grade, and stage.
- Inflammatory or Degenerative Findings: May reveal chronic infections, autoimmune damage, or degenerative disease in large organs.
- Surgical Margins: Report whether the excised lesion was completely removed or if cancer/inflammation extends to the edges.
The report provides critical information for treatment decisions, including surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy.
Risks
The risks are related to the surgical procedure used to obtain the specimen, not the histopathological examination itself. These may include:
- Pain, bleeding, or infection at the surgical site.
- Risks associated with anesthesia or major surgery.
- Scar formation or loss of organ function (depending on the specimen removed).
