Liver Profile, Serum
What it is
The Liver Profile, Serum test is a comprehensive blood panel that evaluates the overall health and function of the liver. It measures key enzymes, proteins, and waste products including bilirubin (total and direct), SGPT (ALT), SGOT (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), albumin, globulin, total protein, and sometimes prothrombin time (PT). These parameters help assess the liver’s ability to metabolize nutrients, produce proteins, and clear toxins from the body.
Uses
This test is used to diagnose liver disease, monitor chronic conditions such as hepatitis or fatty liver, and evaluate damage caused by alcohol, infections, or medications. It is also ordered as part of pre-surgical evaluation, routine health check-ups, and to monitor response to treatment in patients with known liver disorders.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend the Liver Profile, Serum test if you experience symptoms such as persistent fatigue, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), abdominal pain or swelling, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, pale stools, or unexplained weight loss. Individuals with a history of heavy alcohol use, hepatitis infection, obesity, or long-term medication use may also be advised to undergo this test.
Abnormal Results
High ALT/AST: Suggests liver cell injury from hepatitis, alcohol, fatty liver, or toxins.
Elevated Bilirubin: May indicate jaundice, bile duct obstruction, or impaired liver function.
High ALP or GGT: Often associated with bile duct disease or alcohol-related liver injury.
Low Albumin/Abnormal Proteins: May reflect chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, or malnutrition.
Prolonged PT: Suggests impaired production of clotting factors due to liver dysfunction.
Risks
The test requires a routine blood sample. Risks are minimal and may include mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. Serious complications are very rare.
