Marijuana Metabolite (50) (Cannabinoids / THC)
What it is
The Marijuana Metabolite test detects the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) metabolites—the psychoactive compound in cannabis—in a urine sample. The “50” refers to the standard cutoff level of 50 ng/mL commonly used in drug screening to determine a positive result. This test identifies recent marijuana use but does not measure impairment or frequency of use.
Uses
This test is widely used for workplace drug screening, legal investigations, probation monitoring, pre-employment checks, and in clinical settings to evaluate possible drug use. It helps determine whether an individual has recently consumed cannabis or products containing THC.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Though usually performed as part of routine screening rather than due to symptoms, a doctor may order this test if substance use is suspected in cases of altered mental status, confusion, memory impairment, anxiety, paranoia, or unexplained behavioral changes.
Abnormal Results
Positive Result: Indicates THC metabolites in urine at or above 50 ng/mL, confirming marijuana exposure. THC can remain detectable for days to weeks depending on frequency of use, metabolism, and body fat content.
Negative Result: Suggests no detectable THC metabolites or levels below the test’s cutoff. A negative does not always rule out prior use, especially if testing occurred long after exposure.
Risks
The test is non-invasive and involves only urine collection, so risks are minimal. The main considerations are privacy, proper sample handling, and the potential for false positives or negatives due to cross-reactivity with certain medications or products.
