Methaqualone, Urine
What it is
The Methaqualone, Urine test detects the presence of methaqualone (a sedative-hypnotic drug) and its metabolites in urine. Methaqualone, once used medically as a sleep aid and for anxiety, is now largely banned due to its high potential for abuse, addiction, and overdose. It is a commonly misused recreational drug, often known by the street name “Quaalude.”
Uses
This test is used in workplace drug testing, forensic investigations, legal cases, rehabilitation monitoring, and clinical settings to confirm recent methaqualone use. It helps detect drug misuse or abuse, assess compliance in treatment programs, and evaluate suspected intoxication.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
A doctor or clinician may order this test if you present with symptoms of sedative misuse, such as drowsiness, confusion, slurred speech, slowed reflexes, poor coordination, memory problems, low blood pressure, or altered behavior. In severe cases, methaqualone misuse can lead to coma, respiratory depression, or overdose.
Abnormal Results
Positive Result: Indicates the presence of methaqualone metabolites in urine, confirming recent use. The drug is usually detectable for 2–7 days after use, depending on dosage, frequency, and metabolism.
Negative Result: Suggests no methaqualone detected or levels below the test cutoff. This may indicate no recent use, or that the drug has already been cleared from the body.
Risks
The test is non-invasive, requiring only a urine sample. Risks are minimal and limited to privacy concerns or the potential for false positives/negatives due to laboratory limitations or sample adulteration.
