Ovarian Dysfunction Assessment Panel
What it is
The Ovarian Dysfunction Assessment Panel is a group of blood tests designed to evaluate ovarian health, hormonal balance, and reproductive function in women. It typically includes measurements of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol, prolactin, anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), and thyroid function tests. These markers help assess ovarian reserve, menstrual irregularities, and causes of infertility or premature ovarian failure.
Uses
This panel is used to diagnose ovarian dysfunction, evaluate causes of irregular or absent menstrual cycles, and assess fertility status. It helps in the early detection of conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), primary ovarian insufficiency, premature menopause, and hormone-related reproductive issues. It is also used to guide assisted reproductive treatments such as IVF.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend the Ovarian Dysfunction Assessment Panel if you experience symptoms such as irregular or missed periods, difficulty conceiving, hot flashes, night sweats, unexplained weight gain, acne, excessive hair growth, mood swings, or early signs of menopause. Women with a family history of ovarian disorders may also benefit from this evaluation.
Abnormal Results
High FSH / Low AMH: Suggest diminished ovarian reserve or premature ovarian failure.
Abnormal LH:FSH Ratio: Often seen in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Low Estradiol: May indicate ovarian insufficiency or menopause.
High Prolactin: Can interfere with ovulation and fertility.
Abnormal Thyroid Function: May contribute to menstrual irregularities and infertility.
Results should always be interpreted in context with clinical symptoms and imaging studies like pelvic ultrasound.
Risks
The panel requires a routine blood draw. Risks are minimal and may include slight pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. Serious complications are extremely rare.
