Parathyroid Hormone Intact, Serum
What it is
The Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) Intact, Serum test measures the level of intact parathyroid hormone in the blood. PTH is secreted by the parathyroid glands and plays a crucial role in regulating calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D balance in the body. Abnormal levels of PTH may indicate parathyroid gland disorders, calcium imbalance, or bone and kidney-related conditions.
Uses
This test is used to diagnose and monitor hyperparathyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, and secondary parathyroid disorders due to chronic kidney disease or vitamin D deficiency. It also helps evaluate unexplained abnormalities in calcium or phosphorus levels, and assists in monitoring patients undergoing treatment for parathyroid disease, osteoporosis, or kidney disease.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend the PTH Intact test if you have symptoms such as bone pain, muscle weakness, kidney stones, abdominal pain, frequent urination, depression, fatigue, tingling in fingers or lips, or unexplained calcium imbalance detected on routine blood tests.
Abnormal Results
High PTH Levels: May indicate primary hyperparathyroidism (due to parathyroid adenoma or enlargement), secondary hyperparathyroidism (often from chronic kidney disease or vitamin D deficiency), or tertiary hyperparathyroidism in long-term renal failure.
Low PTH Levels: May suggest hypoparathyroidism, which can be due to parathyroid gland damage (after surgery or autoimmune disease), low magnesium, or certain genetic conditions.
Results should always be interpreted alongside calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D levels for accurate diagnosis.
Risks
The test requires a routine blood draw. Risks are minimal and may include mild pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. Serious complications are extremely rare.
