Phosphatidic Acid (APLA) IgG Antibody
What it is
The Phosphatidic Acid (APLA) IgG Antibody test is a specialized blood test that detects IgG class antiphospholipid antibodies (APLA) directed against phosphatidic acid, a phospholipid component of cell membranes. These antibodies are part of the wider spectrum of APLA, which are linked to clotting disorders, recurrent pregnancy loss, and autoimmune diseases such as Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
Uses
This test is used to help diagnose Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome (APS), a condition associated with abnormal blood clotting (thrombosis), stroke, pregnancy complications, and miscarriages. It is often performed alongside other APLA tests, such as anticardiolipin antibodies, lupus anticoagulant, and anti-β2 glycoprotein I antibodies, to provide a comprehensive evaluation of clotting risk.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you have:
– A history of unexplained venous or arterial blood clots (DVT, pulmonary embolism, or stroke).
– Repeated miscarriages or pregnancy-related complications (e.g., preeclampsia, stillbirth, intrauterine growth restriction).
– Autoimmune conditions like lupus with clotting or pregnancy issues.
– Low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia).
– Neurological or skin manifestations associated with APS.
Abnormal Results
Positive APLA IgG (Phosphatidic Acid): Suggests the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies and may indicate increased risk for clotting disorders or pregnancy loss. A positive result should be confirmed with repeat testing and correlated with other antibody tests and clinical symptoms.
Negative APLA IgG: Indicates no detectable antiphospholipid antibodies against phosphatidic acid. However, other APLA subtypes may still be present, so a full panel is often recommended for accurate diagnosis.
Risks
The test involves a routine blood draw. Risks are minimal and may include mild discomfort, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. Serious complications are very rare.
