Thyroid Profile, Total, Serum
What it is
The Thyroid Profile, Total, Serum test is a panel of blood tests that measures total levels of key thyroid hormones: Triiodothyronine (T3), Thyroxine (T4), and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). These hormones play a crucial role in metabolism, energy regulation, growth, and overall body function. Measuring total T3 and T4 includes both free (active) and protein-bound (inactive) hormone fractions.
Uses
This profile is used to evaluate thyroid gland function and diagnose thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), and other metabolic or hormonal imbalances. It is also commonly used to monitor patients receiving thyroid hormone replacement therapy or anti-thyroid medications.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order a Thyroid Profile if you experience signs of thyroid imbalance. For hypothyroidism: fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, dry skin, and depression. For hyperthyroidism: weight loss, heat intolerance, palpitations, tremors, anxiety, sweating, and irritability.
Abnormal Results
High T3 and T4, Low TSH: Suggests hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), possibly due to Graves’ disease, thyroid nodules, or excessive thyroid medication.
Low T3 and T4, High TSH: Indicates hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), commonly caused by Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, iodine deficiency, or thyroid surgery.
Normal Range: Typical reference ranges are: Total T3 (80–200 ng/dL), Total T4 (4.5–12.0 µg/dL), TSH (0.4–4.0 mIU/L). Ranges may vary slightly depending on the laboratory.
Risks
The test requires a simple blood draw. Risks are minimal and may include mild pain, slight bruising, or temporary dizziness. There are no long-term risks associated with this test.
