TNF Alpha, Serum
What it is
The TNF Alpha (Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha) Serum test measures the level of TNF-α, a cytokine that plays a critical role in inflammation and immune system regulation. It is produced mainly by activated macrophages and lymphocytes. Elevated levels of TNF Alpha are associated with autoimmune conditions, chronic inflammation, infections, and certain cancers.
Uses
This test is used to assess inflammatory activity in the body, monitor autoimmune disorders, and evaluate the severity of chronic diseases. It helps in diagnosing conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), psoriasis, sepsis, and some cancers. It may also be used in research settings to monitor the effect of anti-TNF therapies.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you have persistent joint pain, chronic diarrhea, unexplained fever, fatigue, weight loss, skin rashes, or other signs of autoimmune or inflammatory disease. It may also be considered in patients not responding to standard treatments.
Abnormal Results
High TNF Alpha Levels: May indicate autoimmune diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or Crohn’s disease), chronic infections, systemic inflammation, or certain malignancies. Elevated levels are also linked to sepsis and severe infections.
Low or Normal TNF Alpha Levels: Are generally considered normal, but very low levels may sometimes be seen in individuals undergoing treatment with immunosuppressive or anti-TNF medications.
Risks
The TNF Alpha Serum test is a routine blood test with minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, slight bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and in rare cases dizziness or infection.
