Transferrin, Serum
What it is
The Transferrin Serum test measures the level of transferrin, a protein made by the liver that binds and transports iron in the blood. Since transferrin reflects the body’s iron-carrying capacity, it plays a crucial role in diagnosing and monitoring iron-related disorders.
Uses
This test helps in evaluating iron metabolism and detecting conditions such as iron deficiency anemia, chronic illness-related anemia, and hemochromatosis (iron overload). It is also used to assess nutritional status and monitor treatment for anemia or iron disorders.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test if you have fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, brittle nails, unexplained weight loss, or symptoms suggesting iron deficiency or overload. It may also be recommended in patients with chronic liver disease or malnutrition.
Abnormal Results
High Transferrin: Usually seen in iron deficiency anemia, pregnancy, or acute blood loss, as the body increases its capacity to transport iron.
Low Transferrin: May indicate liver disease, chronic infections, malnutrition, or conditions such as nephrotic syndrome and hemochromatosis.
Risks
The test is performed using a routine blood sample. Risks are minimal and may include slight pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
