Urine Bile Salts and Pigments
What it is
The Urine Bile Salts and Pigments test checks for the presence of bile salts and bile pigments such as bilirubin and urobilinogen in a urine sample. These substances are normally processed by the liver and excreted into bile. Their presence in urine may indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or other hepatobiliary disorders.
Uses
This test is used as part of liver function assessment and to help diagnose conditions such as jaundice, hepatitis, cirrhosis, gallstones, and bile duct obstruction. It is also useful in detecting early signs of liver damage or impaired bile flow.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if a patient has symptoms such as yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, pale stools, abdominal pain, nausea, unexplained fatigue, or itching, all of which may indicate liver or gallbladder disease.
Abnormal Results
Positive for Bile Salts and Pigments: Suggests liver dysfunction, bile duct obstruction, hepatitis, cirrhosis, or gallstones. May also be seen in hemolytic conditions where excess bilirubin is produced.
Negative Result: Normal finding, indicating no significant liver or bile duct abnormality.
Risks
This is a simple urine test with no direct risks. It is non-invasive and painless, making it safe for all age groups.
