Urine Culture & Susceptibility
What it is
The Urine Culture & Susceptibility test is a laboratory test used to detect and identify bacteria or fungi causing urinary tract infections (UTIs). The test also determines which antibiotics or antifungal medications are most effective in treating the infection, ensuring targeted therapy.
Uses
This test is commonly ordered to diagnose urinary tract infections, guide antibiotic selection, monitor recurrent UTIs, and detect resistant bacterial strains. It is especially useful in patients with chronic infections or poor response to initial treatment.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you experience burning sensation during urination, frequent urge to urinate, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, pelvic or lower abdominal pain, blood in the urine, or recurrent urinary tract infections.
Abnormal Results
Positive Culture: Indicates the presence of bacteria or fungi in the urine. The susceptibility results specify which antibiotics are effective, helping to guide treatment.
Negative Culture: No growth of microorganisms, suggesting either no infection or that the infection is caused by organisms not detectable in standard culture.
Risks
The test is performed on a urine sample and has no direct risks. The only discomfort may come from the process of urine collection. In rare cases, improper collection can lead to contamination and false results.
