Urine Protein Test
What it is
The Urine Protein test measures the level of protein in urine. Normally, only trace amounts of protein are present. When protein levels are elevated (a condition called proteinuria), it may indicate kidney disease, urinary tract issues, or systemic health problems.
Uses
This test is used to assess kidney function, detect early signs of kidney damage in patients with diabetes or high blood pressure, and monitor chronic kidney disease. It is also used to evaluate urinary tract infections and other conditions that affect the kidneys.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may suggest this test if a patient shows symptoms such as swelling in the hands, feet, or face, foamy or frothy urine, frequent urination, high blood pressure, or unexplained fatigue.
Abnormal Results
High Protein in Urine (Proteinuria): May indicate chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, glomerulonephritis, urinary tract infection, or conditions like multiple myeloma.
Normal/Low Protein in Urine: Suggests healthy kidney function with no significant protein leakage.
Risks
The Urine Protein test is a simple and safe urine test with no risks. It only requires a urine sample, making it a painless and non-invasive procedure.
