VZV PCR (Varicella Zoster Virus PCR)
What it is
The VZV PCR test detects the genetic material (DNA) of the Varicella Zoster Virus using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology. This highly sensitive test is used to confirm infections such as chickenpox (primary VZV infection) and shingles (reactivation of VZV).
Uses
The VZV PCR test is used to diagnose suspected cases of chickenpox and shingles, confirm VZV involvement in central nervous system infections such as meningitis or encephalitis, and detect VZV in atypical or severe cases where antibody tests are not reliable. It is also used in immunocompromised patients where VZV infection may present atypically.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test for patients with a blistering rash, painful skin lesions, unexplained neurological symptoms (headache, seizures, confusion), eye infections, or suspected VZV complications in people with weakened immune systems.
Abnormal Results
Positive Result: Indicates active infection with Varicella Zoster Virus, confirming chickenpox, shingles, or VZV-related complications.
Negative Result: Suggests no detectable VZV DNA, but early infection or improper sampling can occasionally cause false negatives.</
