Zinc, Serum
What it is
The Zinc, Serum test measures the level of zinc in the blood. Zinc is an essential trace mineral that plays a crucial role in immune system function, wound healing, cell growth, and reproduction. Abnormal zinc levels may indicate nutritional deficiencies, malabsorption, or chronic illnesses.
Uses
This test is used to diagnose zinc deficiency or excess, evaluate nutritional status, monitor patients receiving zinc supplementation, and investigate conditions related to poor growth, delayed wound healing, or weakened immunity.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend a zinc test if you have symptoms such as hair loss, delayed wound healing, frequent infections, poor growth in children, loss of appetite, skin rashes, or infertility. It is also ordered in cases of suspected malabsorption syndromes or chronic diarrhea.
Abnormal Results
Low Zinc: May indicate dietary deficiency, malabsorption (celiac disease, Crohn’s disease), chronic liver or kidney disease, severe infections, or alcoholism.
High Zinc: Usually linked to excessive zinc supplementation, occupational exposure, or poisoning. Very high levels can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and interfere with copper metabolism.
Risks
The Zinc, Serum test is a simple blood test with minimal risks. Some people may experience mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
