What it is

The Aldolase, Serum test measures the level of the enzyme aldolase in the blood. Aldolase plays a role in breaking down glucose for energy. This enzyme is normally found in high concentrations in muscle tissue and the liver, and elevated levels in the blood can indicate muscle or liver damage.

Uses

The test is used to help diagnose and monitor muscle diseases such as muscular dystrophy, dermatomyositis, and polymyositis. It may also be used to evaluate liver conditions and to track the progress or treatment response in patients with muscle-related disorders.

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Doctors may recommend an Aldolase test if you experience muscle weakness, pain, or stiffness, unexplained fatigue, difficulty climbing stairs or lifting objects, or signs of liver disease such as jaundice and abdominal discomfort.

Abnormal Results

High Aldolase Levels: Suggest muscle diseases (muscular dystrophy, inflammatory myopathies), muscle injury, liver disease, or certain cancers.

Low Aldolase Levels: Usually not clinically significant but may be seen in reduced muscle mass or chronic illness.

Risks

This is a routine blood test and has minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
