Alkaline Phosphatase, Bone-Specific (BSAP), Serum
What it is
The Alkaline Phosphatase, Bone-Specific (BSAP), Serum test measures the level of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase in the blood. BSAP is an enzyme produced by osteoblasts during bone formation and is an important marker of bone metabolism. This test helps evaluate bone health, bone turnover, and metabolic bone diseases.
Uses
This test is commonly used to diagnose and monitor conditions such as osteoporosis, Paget’s disease, bone metastases, and other metabolic bone disorders. It is also helpful in assessing bone healing, growth disorders, and response to treatment for bone-related conditions.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if a patient experiences bone pain, frequent fractures, loss of height, spinal deformities, abnormal bone growth, or if they are under evaluation for metabolic bone diseases. It is also useful in postmenopausal women and elderly individuals at risk for osteoporosis.
Abnormal Results
High BSAP: Indicates increased bone turnover, commonly seen in osteoporosis, Paget’s disease, bone metastases, hyperparathyroidism, or during bone healing after fractures.
Low BSAP: May be associated with hypophosphatasia, malnutrition, or impaired bone formation.
Risks
The test is a simple blood test with minimal risks. Possible side effects include mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and in rare cases dizziness or infection.
