What it is

The Alkaline Phosphatase Isoenzymes test measures the different forms of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the blood. ALP is an enzyme found in many tissues, mainly the liver, bone, intestine, and placenta. By separating and identifying the isoenzymes, this test helps determine the source of elevated ALP levels.

Uses

This test is commonly used to evaluate liver function, bone disorders, and other conditions that cause abnormal ALP levels. It helps distinguish between liver disease, bone disease, or other underlying causes of ALP elevation.

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Doctors may recommend this test if you have unexplained high ALP levels, jaundice, bone pain, frequent fractures, swollen joints, or signs of liver or bone disease. It is also useful for monitoring patients with known liver or bone conditions.

Abnormal Results

High Liver Isoenzymes: May indicate liver disease such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, bile duct obstruction, or liver cancer.

High Bone Isoenzymes: May suggest bone disorders such as Paget’s disease, rickets, osteomalacia, bone tumors, or healing fractures.

Placental or Intestinal Isoenzymes: May appear during pregnancy, certain cancers, or gastrointestinal conditions.

Risks

The test is a routine blood test with minimal risks. Mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site may occur, and in rare cases dizziness or infection is possible.
