Aluminium, Serum
What it is
The Aluminium, Serum test measures the level of aluminium in the blood. Aluminium is a metal that occurs naturally in the environment and is present in food, water, and certain medications. While small amounts are generally harmless, high levels can be toxic and may accumulate in individuals with impaired kidney function or those exposed to aluminium-containing products.
Uses
This test is used to monitor aluminium exposure in patients receiving long-term dialysis, detect aluminium poisoning, and evaluate suspected aluminium-related health problems. It is also helpful in assessing patients with unexplained bone disease, anemia, or neurological symptoms when aluminium exposure is a concern.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test if you show symptoms such as bone pain, muscle weakness, anemia, confusion, memory problems, or seizures. It is particularly recommended for patients on dialysis or those with prolonged use of aluminium-containing medications like antacids or phosphate binders.
Abnormal Results
High Serum Aluminium: May indicate aluminium toxicity, often linked to dialysis, contaminated water, or excessive use of aluminium-containing drugs. Chronic exposure can lead to bone disease (osteomalacia), encephalopathy, or anemia.
Normal or Low Levels: Suggests no significant aluminium accumulation or exposure. However, results should be interpreted alongside clinical findings and exposure history.
Risks
The test requires a standard blood draw, which carries minimal risks such as slight pain, bruising, or dizziness at the puncture site. No major complications are expected.
