Amphetamine, Urine
What it is
The Amphetamine, Urine test detects the presence of amphetamines and their metabolites in a urine sample. Amphetamines are stimulant drugs used medically for conditions like ADHD and narcolepsy but are also misused recreationally for their stimulating effects. This test is commonly part of workplace, legal, or clinical drug screening.
Uses
This test is used to confirm recent amphetamine use, monitor compliance in patients prescribed stimulant medication, detect drug misuse or abuse, and support medical evaluation in cases of overdose or altered mental status.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may order this test if you show signs of stimulant use such as rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, restlessness, insomnia, dilated pupils, hallucinations, paranoia, or unexplained behavioral changes. It is also used in routine toxicology screens.
Abnormal Results
Positive Result: Indicates recent amphetamine use, usually detectable for 1–3 days after ingestion (longer in heavy or chronic users). A positive result cannot distinguish between prescription and illicit use without clinical history.
Negative Result: Suggests no amphetamines detected within the detection window, or levels below the test’s cutoff. Some synthetic amphetamines may not be picked up by standard tests.
Risks
The test is non-invasive and involves only urine collection, so there are no direct risks. The main considerations are proper sample handling and the possibility of false positives or negatives due to medications, diet, or test sensitivity.
