ANA, IFA Reflex 17 Antigens Immunoblot, Serum
What it is
The ANA, IFA Reflex 17 Antigens Immunoblot, Serum test is a specialized blood test that first detects antinuclear antibodies (ANA) using the Immunofluorescence Assay (IFA) method. If positive, it reflexes to an immunoblot panel of 17 specific autoantibodies to help identify underlying autoimmune diseases. It is one of the most comprehensive autoimmune screening tests.
Uses
This test is used to screen for and confirm autoimmune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Sjögren’s syndrome, scleroderma, mixed connective tissue disease, dermatomyositis, and autoimmune hepatitis. It helps doctors narrow down the diagnosis and guide treatment.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you experience persistent fatigue, unexplained joint pain or swelling, muscle weakness, skin rashes, photosensitivity, mouth ulcers, Raynaud’s phenomenon, or chronic inflammatory symptoms that suggest autoimmune disease.
Abnormal Results
Positive ANA with specific autoantibodies: Suggests the presence of an autoimmune disorder. The pattern and antibody detected (e.g., anti-dsDNA, anti-Smith, anti-SSA, anti-Scl-70) help pinpoint the exact condition.
Negative ANA or absence of specific antibodies: Reduces the likelihood of systemic autoimmune disease but does not completely rule it out, especially in early stages.
Risks
The test involves a simple blood draw, so risks are minimal. Some patients may experience mild pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
