What it is

The Andrology Panel is a set of blood tests that measures levels of three important reproductive hormones in men: luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and prolactin. These hormones are secreted by the pituitary gland and play a crucial role in regulating testicular function, sperm production, and overall male reproductive health.

Uses

This panel is used to evaluate male fertility, sexual function, and possible hormonal disorders. It helps in diagnosing causes of infertility, low testosterone, erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and abnormal breast tissue growth (gynecomastia). It can also assist in detecting pituitary gland problems or testicular failure.

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

Doctors may recommend this panel if you present with infertility, reduced sperm count, low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, delayed or absent puberty, loss of body hair, fatigue, gynecomastia, or symptoms suggestive of pituitary disorders (such as headaches, vision changes, or unexplained hormone imbalances).

Abnormal Results

High LH and FSH: May indicate primary testicular failure, Klinefelter syndrome, or damage from infection, trauma, or chemotherapy.

Low LH and FSH: May suggest pituitary or hypothalamic dysfunction, which can lead to low testosterone and infertility.

Elevated Prolactin: May be caused by a pituitary tumor (prolactinoma), certain medications, or hypothyroidism, leading to reduced testosterone and impaired fertility.

Risks

The panel requires a standard blood draw, which carries minimal risks such as slight pain, bruising, or dizziness. These effects are temporary and usually harmless. The test is safe and provides valuable insights into male reproductive and hormonal health.
