Antenatal Basic II

What it is

The Antenatal Basic II profile is a set of routine laboratory tests recommended during pregnancy to evaluate maternal health and detect risk factors that may affect both mother and baby. It is broader than the Basic I package, covering blood, urine, and infection screenings along with thyroid and sugar assessments.

Uses

This panel helps in the early detection and management of conditions such as anemia, thyroid dysfunction, gestational diabetes, and infectious diseases that could complicate pregnancy. It typically includes tests like complete blood count (CBC), blood group & Rh typing, HIV, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), syphilis (VDRL), urine analysis, random or fasting blood sugar, and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Depending on the laboratory, rubella IgG or liver and kidney function tests may also be included.

Symptoms That May Lead to the Test

This profile is recommended as a standard prenatal check for all pregnant women, regardless of symptoms. However, doctors may highlight its importance if the expectant mother has fatigue, pallor, urinary complaints, swelling, high blood pressure, family history of diabetes, or prior pregnancy complications.

Abnormal Results

Anemia (Low Hemoglobin): Indicates the need for dietary supplements or treatment to support oxygen supply to mother and fetus.

Positive Infections (HIV, HBsAg, VDRL): Require timely intervention to reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission.

Abnormal Blood Sugar: May suggest gestational diabetes, requiring dietary or insulin therapy.

Urine Abnormalities: Indicate possible urinary tract infections, kidney involvement, or preeclampsia risk.

Abnormal TSH Levels: Suggest thyroid dysfunction, which can affect fetal growth and development if untreated.

Risks

The test panel involves blood sampling and urine collection. Risks are minimal, limited to mild bruising, temporary discomfort, or slight dizziness after the blood draw. No long-term risks are associated, and the benefits in ensuring maternal and fetal safety far outweigh any minor discomfort.
