Anti-HBc Total (Antibody to Hepatitis B Core Antigen)
What it is
The Anti-HBc Total test detects total antibodies (IgM and IgG) against the Hepatitis B core antigen in the blood. These antibodies indicate current, past, or resolved infection with the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). Unlike HBsAg or Anti-HBs tests, Anti-HBc remains positive for life once a person has been infected with HBV.
Uses
This test is used to diagnose past or ongoing Hepatitis B infection, differentiate between acute, chronic, and resolved HBV cases, and evaluate the need for further HBV testing. It is also commonly included in blood donor screening and pre-surgical evaluations to rule out Hepatitis B exposure.
Symptoms That May Lead to the Test
Doctors may recommend this test if you have symptoms of Hepatitis B such as jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes), fatigue, dark urine, abdominal pain, nausea, or if you are at risk due to unprotected sex, IV drug use, or occupational exposure.
Abnormal Results
Positive Anti-HBc Total: Indicates prior exposure to HBV. It may mean past resolved infection, ongoing chronic infection, or a window period of acute infection when other markers are not detectable.
Negative Anti-HBc Total: Suggests no evidence of past or present Hepatitis B infection.
Risks
This is a simple blood test with minimal risks. Possible side effects include slight pain, bruising, or bleeding at the puncture site, and rarely dizziness or infection.
